If you perform repairs and modifications on e-bikes, ensure that they, along with any associated accessories, can be charged and used safely after your work. If you are uncertain about the safety of your repairs, do not undertake the work.
If you choose to take on this work, you must be competent to perform the work safely, understand your legal responsibilities and adhere to the best practice outlined below:
- Service only road legal e-bikes which are UKCA or CE marked and which have the e-bike safety standard EN15194 printed on the frame label.
- Refuse to service e-bikes which have been modified, de-restricted or ‘dongled”.
- Refuse to work on unrecognised e-bike electrical systems or batteries, and if conducting purely mechanical work on these cycles, require that the battery pack be removed first and taken away from the premises by the customer. Under no circumstances should unrecognised battery packs be stored on the premises overnight or charged when unattended.
- If asked to modify or de-restrict any e-bike, to refuse and to inform customers about the risks and implications for legal use.
- If asked to repair, rebuild or re-cell an e-bike battery pack in any manner not clearly authorised by the original manufacturer, to refuse and to inform the customer about the safety risks of this course of action.
- To store, transport and dispose of any waste battery safely and in accordance with hazardous goods regulations
- If you are supplying chargers or batteries, you must be sure of the source, and be able to prove they are safe.
- If you are supplying chargers or batteries, you must provide customers with required warnings, labelling, and instructions for their safe use.
- All parts, including chargers and batteries need to be compatible with each other, and the e-bike or e-scooter.
- If you supply parts and convert a bike or a scooter into an e-bike or e-scooter, you are legally responsible for its safety, and may be liable for any damage caused by any defect.
- Have processes in place to ensure that unsafe recalled parts and products are not used.
- Make modifications or repairs only in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, using approved parts.
